The AA has said it now offers up to £750 worth of MoT insurance for cars up to 10 years old with less than 120,000 miles on the clock.
AA Insurance Services managing director Andrew Briscoe said: "Car running costs can be unpredictable, making the annual MoT test a financial black hole for some motorists.
"A failing braking system would result in an MoT test failure and could easily cost £500 to repair. This policy covers the cost of repairs and replacement parts and labour up to £750."
The company said more than 40,000 of the 120,000 cars tested last year in its AA Service Centres (previously Halfords) failed their MOT and required repair work and re-tests.
The policy covers an extensive range of parts noted on the VT30 MoT Test form, and is available for cars up to 10 years old, or with up to 120,000 miles on the clock.
Proof of the last scheduled service is required.
Annual cover is £50, and AA members qualify for a 10% discount.
