Local authorities in Wales are launching a major clampdown on fraudulent insurance claims, which are estimated to have cost council taxpayers £30m in the past 12 months.

Councils in Wales received an estimated 5,500 'slip and trip' claims and related incidents last year.

Local authority lawyers believe a large proportion of these are false, with claimants encouraged by commission-based street hawkers and 'no-win, no-fee' claims farmers.

Among the proposed measures is a national database used to track the movement of fraudsters and prevent them from making claims in many UK local authority areas.

Malicious claimants will also be subject to court proceedings in a bid to recover costs incurred by taxpayers.
