The US government has extended its temporary third-party war and terrorism risk cover for 60 days. It was due to expire on 20 March, but had been widely expected to be renewed.
Like many governments around the world, the US government has been providing this cover since the WTC attacks.
It was reported on Tuesday that US airlines are likely to create a mutual insurance company to cover these risks in future.
However, the new scheme, called Equitime, would only start operating in May - so a renewal to the US government scheme was essential.
There is uncertainty for airlines around the world until new schemes are in place. The UK Troika scheme is due to expire on 20 March.
