The number of motorists fined for not having valid motor insurance has dropped by more than a third over the past five years, justice minister Crispin Blunt has told Parliament.

Responding to a written question from Labour MP Chris Ruane, Blunt revealed that in 2009- the last year for which figures are available, 125,556 people were fined for using a motor vehicle uninsured against third party risks.

The 2009 figures were part of a breakdown of fine statistics for the ten years from 2000 onwards, which showed that the total handed out for driving without insurance peaked in 2004 (200,588).

The figures apply to England and Wales only. Updated statistics for 2010 will be available on 26 May 2011 when the latest court proceedings data is due to be published.
