There are two staff confirmed dead and 313 missing from MMC after the terrorist attacks in New York.
Chairman Jeff Greenberg said about 1,900 people from MMC businesses, which include leading risk and reinsurance firm Marsh, worked in or were visiting the twin towers of the World Trade Center when they were destroyed last Tuesday.
He said: “We are saddened beyond words that 313 people from MMC are missing and that two others are confirmed dead, including one who was aboard a hijacked aircraft. We are deeply grateful for all those who are safe.”
The company is establishing a fund to honour the victims and help their families.
All the missing workers were in the north tower of the World Trade Center, the first tower to be hit, on the 93rd to the 100th floors. All staff who were in the south tower are thought to have been evacuated to safety.
Of the group's businesses, Marsh was particularly badly affected by the damage. Greenberg did not put a figure on the losses faced by the company but said: “I want you to know that MMC is financially and operationally strong – all areas of our businesses are operating effectively.”
