Loss prevention company Thiefbeaters said that less than 1% of the property that it protected had been reported stolen.

The company said its system's success came from its ability to provide permanent identification of property.

Unique marks, electronics transponders and microdots are applied to the structure and fabric of an item in up to 50 locations. This makes it almost impossible for a thief to conceal the item's legal identity.

Also, visual warning stickers are placed in obvious locations, alerting thieves and handlers to the risk of being caught and prosecuted.

Full details of the identification are held on a rapid-access database. In the event of theft, police can call the emergency helpline and obtain a full stolen report within minutes.

Due to the versatility of the system, Thiefbeaters said, it had been taken up by a wide variety of companies in industries as diverse as automotive, construction, agriculture, leisure and hire.

Thiefbeaters has also received Thatcham recognition.

The company said more and more insurers were now acknowledging Thiefbeaters' ability to deter theft and many were offering premium discounts and other incentives to clients who fitted the system.
