Gender vote splitThe EU looks likely to drop controversial legislation that could outlaw the use of gender as a rating factor by insurers. A recent debate at Council of Ministers level was split over the issue, with a 17/8 majority of member states, including the UK, opposing the measure in its current form.

Offshore backlashBusinesses with offshored call centres risk facing a consumer backlash, revealed research commissioned by broker Swinton.It found that 67% of respondents would not purchase a policy from a call centre if they knew it had been moved offshore.

Kinnect boostMarsh and Willis both increased the volume of business they placed using the Kinnect platform during May, said Kinnect.Since 1 May, Marsh has sent out risk data to underwriters relating to its North American portfolio. Willis has also increased the volume of North American property business through Kinnect.

SVB appointmentSVB Holdings said it had appointed a former Royal & SunAlliance team to its specialist liability subsidiary, Novae Underwriting.Stuart Quinlan has been appointed as underwriting development director for Novae. Dominick Rodgers and Gail Cook will develop the Scotland and Southern regions respectively.

Layton profit riseLayton Blackham Holdings Ltd premium income jumped 32% from £16m in 2002 to £21m in 2003. Group marketing director Charles Whitfield: "This is premium handled on behalf of our insurers. Layton Blackham themselves do not take on any risk." Pre-tax profits almost trebled from £307,664 in 2002 to £936,258 in 2003.
