Mawer previously served from 1996 to 2002

Sir Philip Mawer has rejoined the board of Ecclesiastical Insurance Office as a non-executive director.

He previously served from 1996-2002.

Mawer's career has been spent in the service of the public and the church, says Ecclesiastical. Initially a civil servant in the Home Office and the Cabinet Office, he was appointed Secretary General of the General Synod of the Church of England in 1990 and subsequently Secretary General of the Archbishops' Council. He was knighted in 2002 for his services to the church.

From 2002 to 2007 he served as the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. His duties included investigating complaints against Members of Parliament. He stepped down from this role in December 2007 to take up a new appointment as the Prime Minister's Independent Adviser on ministers' interests.

Mawer is patron or trustee of a number of church-related and other charities; an honorary lay canon of St. Albans cathedral; and holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Hull and Hertfordshire.

Ecclesiastical's Group Chief Executive Michael Tripp said: "Sir Philip will bring a wealth of experience to the Board and we look forward to his guidance and advice on our future direction."
