Premium content: In his new appointment Mark Armitage is targeting regional broking growth
Mark Armitage is targeting regional broking growth in his new role as broking and placement managing director in Arthur J Gallagher’s UK retail operations.
Armitage joins Michael Rea’s UK Retail executive team and has executive level responsibilities for all broking and placement activities across the UK retail operations.
His appointment follows the departure of Declan Durkan who has now left the business.
He will work closely with the regional leadership in the UK to embed the broking and placement strategy across the branch network.
He will also help to deliver products.
Armitage told Insurance Times: “I’m delighted to be taking on this new role and very much looking forward to working with our broking & placement teams within UK Retail.
“This is a great opportunity to build out our existing regional broking capabilities and those in the London market to further enhance Gallagher’s overall proposition for clients.”
As a result of Armitage’s new role Gallagher has also appointed Pen Underwriting executive chairman Jonathan Turner as chief executive of the managing general agency.
Turner, who was appointed executive chairman in September 2015, will assume full day-to-day management of Pen, a £500m underwriting business and its 400-strong team.
Arthur J Gallagher International chief executive Grahame Chilton said: “Under Mark’s steerage the team has brought together and integrated a collection of some of the best known and respected UK underwriters and built one strong, specialist underwriting business that is now the second largest MGA in the UK.”
Chilton said Turner’s core objectives include further international expansion and development of Pen’s specialist underwriting portfolio, and looking at alternative ways to provide capacity.
Armitage added: “Pen is a trading underwriting business that offers a fantastic blend of expertise, specialist knowledge and distribution, all fashioned around a team of dedicated underwriters who add value to our customers at every stage of the underwriting process.
”That is Pen’s point of differentiation and I am incredibly proud of the business we have built together. For me, it is back to broking within Arthur J Gallagher’s UK Retail division, from where I look forward to watching Pen’s ongoing transformation under Jon’s leadership.”
