Drivers of silver cars are the unluckiest in the country, according to research from motor claims management provider Accidentcare Group.
Its research showed drivers of silver cars made nearly twice as many insurance claims per head as owners of red cars.
It found while silver cars accounted for just 14% of vehicles on the road, they were involved in nearly a fifth of all insurance claims (19%).
Accidentcare said red car drivers were shown to be the safest in the country, despite the aggressive connotations associated with the colour. Red cars make up nearly a third of all vehicles (29%), but are involved in just 21% of accident claims.
After silver, white cars were found to be the most dangerous to drive. With 3.2 million on the road (14% of the total), they make 17% of insurance claims. Conversely, drivers of blue cars, the UK's most popular colour at 30%, are safe, making just over a quarter (27%) of insurance claims.
Accidentcare said the research considered the five most popular car colours only and was based on the number of cars in use in Great Britain as at December 31, 2000, as supplied by The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited.
It added that figures on claims were provided from its own records.
