Royal & SunAlliance has become one of the first insurers to launch a subsidence map capable of narrowing down risk to individual properties.

The map, to be rolled out in July through More Th>n call centres, combines up to eight layers of information on flood and subsidence risk.

It then uses geo-codes, a combination of the full postcode plus the house number, to break the information down to specific properties.

The risk mapping system is an intranet based application that grades all properties as green, amber or red, depending on their level of risk.

Royal & SunAlliance technical underwriting director Colin Short said: "This will help us offer cover to a lot more houses and is all part of our philosophy of giving customers more service. What we are trying to do is be more proactive and more responsive to changing criteria in both flood and subsidence risk."

The map is reported to have cost "in the millions" and could directly affect premium rates for over 200,000 properties.
