Quinn Direct charged a teenage driver £17,800 to insure a car that he bought for just £400, The Bolton News reports.

Chris Berry, 18, has been unable to drive his Volkswagen Polo since he bought it last year because he has been unable to afford the insurance.

Quinn Direct came up cheapest for basic third-party insurance in Berry’s search on price comparison sites, charging him just under £5,000. But fully comprehensive cover from Quinn came in at £17,800.

The Bolton News quoted Berry as saying: “They actually rang me up after I got that quote and asked me if I wanted to take it out. I told them they were having a laugh — it’s a Polo, not a Ferrari.”

A spokesman for Quinn direct told the paper that insuring young drivers was expensive and that the company’s research showed the average cost of getting on the road was £8,260.
