Insurer hopes to send a message to potential fraudsters

QBE has spoken out after the sentencing of a man that tried to scam them for £250,000 after a slip at work.

Earlier today former Airbus Operations aircraft mechanic Adam Lee Roberts was found in contempt of court and jailed for six months at the High Court.

In a statement, QBE said: “QBE welcomes the decision of the Royal Courts of Justice today. We are pleased to be at the forefront of legal decisions which illustrate our resolve to successfully combat fraudulent claims. Fraudulent claims cost the insurance industry an estimated £2.1bn a year, adding an average £50 a year to the insurance bill for every UK policyholder.

“We are proud of our reputation in the payment of valid claims and as providers of employers liability insurance to Airbus were keen to ensure that a claimant was compensated appropriately for injury suffered at work. However, in this case the claimant sought to deliberately exaggerate the extent of his injuries in order to inflate his claim by hundreds of thousands of pounds and in doing so his actions were held to be in contempt of court.

“We believe this case will send a stark message to other claimants who attempt to fraudulently inflate claims at the expense of policyholders and the insurance sector in general. QBE will continue to expend efforts and resources, working closely with our business partners, the police and the justice system in order to identify, investigate and, if appropriate, pursue any claimants we believe to be acting fraudulently.
