Police are unlikely to expressly declare recent public disturbances as “riots”, according to loss adjusting firm Crawford.
The firm also warned policyholders to pay attention to clauses in their policies, particularly those involving notification requirements.
“As the disturbances continue, consideration will also need to be given to the number of occurrences, protection expenses and 72 hour clauses that might apply,” Crawford said in a statement.
“At this stage the incidents do not appear to have any political agenda and as such, gaps in coverage are unlikely to exist where terrorism is excluded,” the statement added.
Loss adjusters are reportedly struggling to gain access to areas affected by recent riots as many areas have been declared unsafe by police.
Presently, much of the damage is focused on retail premises where there has been extensive looting and damage to property.
