Employees who use the internet are increasingly becoming news addicts, a survey has found.
In its annual survey, web monitor company Websense found that over 20% of employees felt that news was the most addictive content on the web.
One of the reasons for this was that only 4% of companies block access to news sites, it said.
Websense chief technology officer Harold Kester said: "Initially we saw most abuse in pornography and gambling sites, now we are seeing more time spent on news sites."
However they warned that un-monitored surfing is costing business millions. A company where 1000 employees surf the web for just one hour a day will lose £30m each year in lost productivity, it said.
