PartnerRe has reported a net loss of $288.7m for the third quarter – compared with a profit of $83.2m in the prior year period – due to the impact of Hurricane Katrina and other catastrophe losses during the three months ended 30 September.

PartnerRe's non-life combined ratio jumped to 156.3% for the quarter, from 99.5% in the comparable period of 2004.

Net written premiums at the reinsurer dipped 4.3% to $770.8m.

For the first nine months of 2005, PartnerRe reported a loss of $17.4m, compared with net income of $348.7m for the prior year period, while net premiums written declined 6.9% to $2.95bn.
