Insurers now demanding proof of purchase during claims process
A new study by a UK discount website has found 26% of people have falsified home insurance claims.
In a poll of more than 1800 people, more than half of respondents also admitted to lying about items stolen from their homes in order to receive new items.
Of the respondents that claimed to have never lied on their home insurance, 54% said that they would if they thought they could get away with it.
When further looking into the extent of dishonesty in relation to insurance policies, MyVoucherCodes.co.uk found that, of the respondents with a car insurance policy, 36% had lied when taking out their policy.
Farhad Farhadi, personal finance expert at MyVoucherCodes.co.uk said: “I wasn’t surprised to see that a quarter had lied when claiming on their home insurance, as I can see why people would be tempted to try and get new products or items they didn’t have before, especially after a break-in, where claimants are no doubt just trying to create a silver lining.”
“Insurers are making it more difficult for customers to do this, requesting receipts from people and generally making it harder for them to lie, but I think more needs to be done, as people are evidently still being crafty,” he added.
