Insurance Times rounds up the biggest moves and promotions from 17 to 21 March 2025

Starting off the week, The Clear Group appointed Simon Smith as its new group chief operating officer.

In his new role, Smith will be responsible for operations, IT and data, integrations, claims and facilities and procurement.

Then, Markel announced that its three primary underwriting businesses – Markel Specialty, Markel International and Markel Global Reinsurance – will collectively be referred to as Markel Insurance.

The insurer also revealed that Simon Wilson, who is currently president of Markel International, will lead the new venture as chief executive.

Following this, Eric Andersen stepped down from his role as president at Aon.

Andersen will now serve as senior advisor to chief executive Greg Case and will stay in the role until 2026, the broker said.

After that, the International Underwriting Association (IUA) appointed Chris Jones as its new chief executive, with Dave Matcham having decided to step down.

Jones is set to formally take up his responsibilities on 1 May 2025. The move comes as Matcham plans to retire after a London market career of 45 years, including 20 years heading the IUA.

Rounding off the week, Gallagher appointed Stephen Smith as its new managing director of broking and placement for its UK and Ireland retail division.
