’Watson goes with our thanks and best wishes for the future,’ says spokesperson

RSA has confirmed that Steve Watson, managing director of UK specialty lines, is leaving the insurer.

He will be replaced by Jonathan Cope, who is RSA’s general counsel and company secretary, as well as managing director of personal lines.

In May 2019, Watson joined the firm from Zurich as group casualty portfolio director. He ended up in his current role after leading the London market business on an interim basis in 2020.

An RSA spokesperson told Insurance Times that Watson has ”decided that now is the right time to leave RSA”.

They added: “Since joining in 2020, he has played an instrumental role in helping grow our UK specialty lines business. Watson goes with our thanks and best wishes for the future.”

Successor

Successor Cope, meanwhile, has over two decades of legal and corporate experience.

He joined the insurer in 2013 as group legal counsel before becoming general counsel and company secretary in 2021. He took up the role following the takeover of RSA by Intact Financial Corporation.

Cope took up the additional role of personal lines managing director in February 2024.

Prior to RSA, he worked as a lawyer at multiple law firms, including Weil, Gotshal and Manges, as well as Debevoise and Plimpton.

Working at these firms saw him gain experience in M&A, private equity, restructuring and corporate law.
