’Subsidence is a specialist area, with insurers seeking a professional service that prioritises quality, technical accuracy and proactive decision-making,’ says leader
Global claims services provider McLarens has announced the launch of a dedicated subsidence team in the UK.
The firm said the team will provide “expert-led, pragmatic claims management across commercial property, real estate, public sector and high net worth (HNW) losses.”
It will be led by Duncan Hamilton, who joined McLarens in 2024. He previously led the national specialist subsidence team at global loss adjusting firm Sedgwick International UK.
Steven Wallace, managing director of McLarens UK and EMEA, said: “With extensive industry experience, Hamilton brings a fresh approach to subsidence claims, prioritising technical accuracy, ownership and tailored mitigation strategies, whilst maintaining the quality service reputation we’re renowned for.”
Leveraging in-house expertise
McLarens said the new function aims to “prevent under-reserved losses, inaccurate initial assessments and unnecessary claim escalations” by leveraging “in-house surveying and engineering expertise, minimising reliance on costly external consultants who are often less experienced in subsidence”.

It added that “every claim will be personally visited and overseen by a subsidence adjuster, ensuring thorough technical assessments and early intervention to mitigate risks effectively”.
Hamilton said: “The market increasingly recognises that a one-size-fits-all approach and corner-cutting dressed up as efficiencies on subsidence claims simply doesn’t work. The repercussions are widespread.
“Subsidence is a specialist area, with insurers seeking a professional service that prioritises quality, technical accuracy and proactive decision-making.
“By appointing McLarens experienced, multiskilled subsidence adjusters, we’re ensuring that every claim is visited and managed efficiently, reducing unnecessary delays and spiralling costs. We aim to provide a smarter, more effective subsidence solution that delivers real value to all stakeholders.”
