He was an active underwriter for the Syndicate for more than 55 years 

Former active underwriter for Syndicate 727 Michael Meacock passed away quietly earlier this week (22 February 2023) at the age of 85.

Meacock was the active underwriter of the syndicate for more than 55 years and was affectionately known as the “father of the house” at Lloyd’s of London.

A Lloyd’s statement said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Michael Meacock at age 85.

”Meacock was a prominent and respected figure in the Lloyd’s market, having led SA Meacock’s Syndicate 727 for a remarkable 55 years.

“He will be remembered as a man of integrity, resilience and kindness to those of us who knew him.

”Our condolences and support go to Michael’s family and everyone at SA Meacock.”

Many in the insurance industry expressed their condolences on LinkedIn.

Clegg Gifford chief executive Toby Clegg said: “My father broked with him for many years and we’ve increased our name’s participation with him every year for decades.

”What a very sad piece of news – but his legend will live on.”

Meanwhile, Brett Santy, chief executive at BLW, said: “We can all look at how this wonderful gentleman managed his business and learn a lot, hopefully some of those lessons can be taken forward.

“Sometimes the old ways are indeed the best.”

Dawn Lowry, broking director at AJ Gallagher Re, said: “One of the true greats. I feel honoured that he served me tea in his boardroom. I always called him Mr Meacock as a mark of respect.”

According to a post from Hampden Group on its website, SA Meacock-managed Syndicate 727 averaged an annual gross profit on capacity of 8.5% between 1999 to 2020.

Back in June 2004, Moody’s Investor Services upgraded the performance rating of the Syndicate from below average (B minus) to average (B) with a stable outlook.
