Paul Coates, director at McCarron Coates, discusses the firm’s entry for the Insurance Broker of the Year award

1. Why did you put yourselves forwards for the Insurance Broker of the Year award?

This award seemed just reward for our excellent business performance in 2023/4, but also a series of initiatives that we believe to be beyond the norm.

We far exceeded client acquisition targets and, consequently, premium growth and job creation expectations. However, we also ensured that job satisfaction and customer service remained very high.

Having achieved 90% and 94% retention rates for staff and clients respectively, whilst also introducing major new initiatives for fleet customers and signing two new insurer partner agreements with trade bodies, we believed we had a lot to shout about, for which we could gain industry recognition.

2. What do you think makes your entry stand out and why should you win the award?

Added value was our mantra, as we launched a unique, free ‘RTC Crisis Line’ service, offering commercial drivers face-to-face legal representation, if involved in police-investigated incidents.

From first interview, to any prosecution’s conclusion, they – and their employer – have support, can defend allegations and have an expert present mitigating factors.

Additionally, we analysed possible scenarios relating to the Highway Code’s Hierarchy of Road Users and the new law and devised an innovative ‘Road Hierarchy’ board game, to engage customers and underline risk messages.

We also commissioned consumer research to support a ‘Fatal Distraction’ campaign, highlighting motoring law lack of awareness.

3. What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?

Top award recognition would give a major boost to a team that has adopted an innovative and strategic customer-focused broking approach, bold in nature and based on true concern for our customers’ significant new risks.

It would reward our decision to find unique and engaging ways to both mitigate and communicate the dangers. It is the ultimate recognition of a brokerage’s achievements and something of which potential clients and employees take note. Leveraging award success could be truly beneficial for future growth.

We rightly view this as a huge accolade that could clearly brand us a game-changing risk manager.
