Matthew Renshaw, sustainability consultant on major and complex loss at Crawford and Company, talks about the firm’s entry for the Sustainability Initiative of the Year award
1. Why did you put yourselves forwards for the Sustainability Initiative of the Year category?
We entered this category to showcase our innovative Zero to Landfill policy – a key milestone in our mission to incorporate more sustainable practices into our operations and a transformative step in environmental risk assessment and soil waste management within the environmental claims industry.
By pioneering sustainable practices like these and involving partners from across the industries we work with, we aim to inspire others to act and adopt pragmatic sustainability solutions that reduce the impact of claims fulfilment to the environment.
2. What do you think makes your entry stand out and why should you win the award?
Our entry stands out because it addresses a critical environmental challenge with innovative solutions. Our groundbreaking pollution risk assessment tool transforms how soil contamination is managed on and off site, allowing us to minimise excavation works and ensure that 100% of generated soil waste is diverted from landfill.
Not only does this approach significantly reduce associated carbon emissions, but it also drives efficiency across the claims process, by reducing time delays and costs – making it a game-changer for sustainable practices in claims fulfilment.
3. What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?
Our Zero to Landfill policy is the first of its kind in our sector. Winning this award would be great recognition of our team’s hard work and determination to lead the way in delivering environmental claims in the most efficient and sustainable manner possible.
Most importantly, it would also inspire us to continue challenging the industry norms and demonstrate our continued commitment to ESG principles as a company.
By sharing our innovation and early achievements, we aim to inspire expansion and adoption of our market-leading policy across the insurance industry, that would in turn foster a more sustainable and planet-positive approach to claims fulfilment.
