’We managed to raise an impressive haul for UK cancer charities,’ says floor manager

Bishop’s Stortford-based broker Sterling Insurance, part of the Adrian Flux Group, has raised a record £17,500 for cancer charities through its annual Sterling Cup golf event.

This year’s competition took place on 12 September 2024 at Manor of Groves Hotel, Golf and Health Club, in Sawbridgeworth.

The 18 hole course, spanning 6,300 yards, brought together 80 players from across the insurance industry.

The £17,500 raised this year marks the largest donation in the event’s four-year history, with funds set to benefit various cancer support causes.

Peter Cook, floor manager at Sterling, commended the “team effort” driving the event’s success, noting that fundraising totals have grown each year.

Some £10,000 was raised in 2021, £12,000 in 2022 and £15,000 in 2023.

Cook said: “Thanks to the incredible generosity of all the players who travelled from far and wide across the UK, we managed to raise an impressive haul for UK cancer charities.”

Archie’s cause

Among the causes supported by the Sterling Cup is a fund for young Archie Wilks, the eight-year-old son of Sterling employee Simon Wilks, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma – a rare form of cancer concerning immature nerve cells – in January 2019.

The tournament was first created to raise money for Archie’s treatment following his diagnosis.

The Sterling Cup now distributes its fundraising proceeds across multiple charities, while continuing to support the Wilks family.

This includes the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity, Macmillan Cancer Support and Maggie’s.

Cook told Insurance Times on 7 August 2024: “The Sterling Cup was born out of an idea to raise money for people that are going through cancer treatment after personal experiences from staff of the company.”
