’This decision marks the culmination of careful consideration,’ says senior partner
Howden Scotland has acquired Neilson Laurence and Neil in its first acquisition since adopting the Howden brand earlier this year.
A statement released today (3 November 2023) explained that the acquisition would “strengthen Howden’s presence in Scotland.”
It will also expand the opportunities for clients in the country by adding expertise and capabilities.
Formerly known as Bruce Stevenson, Howden Scotland is based in Glasglow and provides insurance solutions to businesses across the UK.
Neilson Laurence and Neil will fully integrate into Glasgow team, expanding the portfolio of insurance and risk management solutions available to clients.
Howden added that this would increase the “scope” of services offered to clients, such as directors and officers liability insurance (D&O), professional indemnity insurance (PI) and motor.
The move came after Howden folded Aston Lark and A-Plan into brand name.
The rebrand followed after the broker’s announcement in April 2023 that it would unify and simplify its business structure under a single and aligned global executive.
Douglas Linn, senior partner at Neilson Laurence and Neil, said: “This decision marks the culmination of careful consideration and it’s clear that the timing is perfect.
“Joining forces with Howden Scotland, with their unwavering commitment to client satisfaction and deep industry expertise, will only serve to enhance our capabilities and reach.”
Geographical reach
Howden Scotland explained that both companies operated with an “entrepreneurial culture and people-first values” and fit into Howden UK&I’s wider growth strategy.

It added that the strategy was a bid to reinforce its “widest geographical reach and deepest product line expertise across the UK market.
Kenny Hogg, chief executive officer of Howden Scotland, commented: “As Howden Scotland expands, it is essential that we continue to build on market expertise and Neilson Laurence and Neil is therefore an ideal partner for us in this regard.
“I look forward to welcoming Douglas and his team to our Glasgow office and collectively delivering the best possible solutions to our clients.”
