’Flood resilience isn’t just a technical term – it’s a lifeline for communities,’ says interim chief executive

Flood Re and the Scottish Forum have teamed up to help boost property-level flood resilience knowledge in Scotland.

The deal will see the duo launch a Flood Bus at the annual Scottish Flood Resilience conference next week (28-29 January 2025), which is run by environmental knowledge broker Sniffer.

The Flood Bus, called Flo, will promote property flood resilience (PFR) measures and Build Back Better (BBB) repairs to brokers, insurers, claims service providers, flood risk management professionals, specialist suppliers, builders, individuals and communities at flood risk.

BBB was launched in April 2022 and offers policyholders the chance to install property flood resilience measures up to the value of £10,000 when repairing their properties after a flood.

The introduction of Flo comes following the revelation that there were 17,829 insurance policies ceded to Flood Re in Scotland in Q3 2024.

This was announced after Storm Babet struck parts of eastern Scotland in 2023, with homes being evacuated due to rain and wind damage,

Stuart Logue, interim chief executive at Flood Re, said: “Flood resilience isn’t just a technical term – it’s a lifeline for communities.

“We know from experience that physical demonstration of property flood resilience measures plays an important role in driving action in the implementation of important measures.”

Flooding preparation

After the conference, the bus will engage with flood resilience groups in the Perth area as part of the local museum’s Water’s Rising exhibition.

From mid-March 2025, it will travel to communities at risk of flooding, supporting initiatives by the Scottish Flood Forum and regional flood resilience events.

In addition to demonstrating resilience measures and effective repairs, Flo will provide information on flooding preparation.

It will showcase case studies that highlight the impact even small investments can have in the event of a flood.

Logue will also speak at the conference on innovative approaches to building flood resilience.

Carol Raeburn, director at the Scottish Flood Forum, said: “We are delighted that Flo is joining our family and she will be a key tool in helping our flood risk communities understand how they can prepare for flooding – both in keeping water out and in having resilience should water enter the property.”
