’Unless insurers meet our demand to stop insuring new oil and gas, we will keep targeting them,’ says protester

Extinction Rebellion (XR) have stormed another insurance office as the group continues its protests across London this week.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, today (30 October 2024), XR said it had occupied AIG’s office in Fenchurch Street.

Pictures show protesters inside the lobby of the office. They also placed a large Jenga-like prop outside the building that they dubbed “climate collapse Jenga”.

It is the third protest XR have carried out this week, with them also targeting the Walkie Talkie building on Monday and The Gherkin on Tuesday.

The Walkie Talkie building is home to Ascot, Talbot, Chaucer, Markel, Allied World, CNA Hardy and Tokio Marine Kiln, while The Gherkin houses Swiss Re.

Just Stop Oil also joined the protests this week, with it occupying the Colmore Building in Birmingham, which houses insurers such as Chubb and Allianz.

Protester comment

The protests come as part of the Insure Our Survival Campaign, which aims to stop insurance firms from insuring new fossil fuel projects.

Insure Our Survival spokesperson Steve Tooze said: “They can make it impossible for fossil fuel bosses to keep drilling and digging by pulling the plug on the insurance that covers their huge financial losses if things go wrong.

“Unless insurers meet our demand to stop insuring new oil and gas, we will keep targeting them with mass non-violent direct action.”
