’[He] will bring independence, gravitas and a breadth of experience to our board,’ says chief executive
(Re)insurer Canopius has announced that insurance veteran Andy Haste will become its new group chairman in July.
In his new role, the former RSA chief executive will take responsibility for chairing the group board as the firm looks to expand further.
He will take over from current chair Michael Watson, who will stand down but continue to support Canopius in an advisory capacity.
Neil Robertson, Canopius chief executive, said: “Andy will bring independence, gravitas and a breadth of experience to our board that will help shape the next chapter of the Canopius journey.
“We also express heartfelt thanks to Michael, who has been instrumental in building Canopius over the past two decades and has skilfully steered our board for the last two years since I assumed the role of chief executive.”
Experience
As well as being the former boss of RSA, Haste had also been the chief executive of AxA Sun Life during his career.

“Throughout Andy’s career, he has forged a reputation as a strong leader who acts with conviction and who has a proven track record,” Robertson said.
“All qualities that I believe will serve Canopius well. I believe that the appointment of an individual of Andy’s stature in the industry demonstrates our ambition for Canopius in the coming years and we’re delighted to have him on board.”
Haste added: “I am honoured to join Canopius as its group chair and excited to work closely with Neil and his management team, as well as my fellow board members on the next stage of Canopius’ journey.
“I would like to thank Michael for his service to Canopius over many years and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”
His career began in 2019, when he joined a local north London newspaper after graduating from the University of Sheffield with a first-class honours degree in journalism.
He took up the position of deputy news editor at Insurance Times in March 2023, before being promoted to his current role in May 2024.View full Profile
