A new deputy president was also announced at the institute’s AGM

Swiss Re Solutions chief executive Russell Higginbotham has been elected as president of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) for 2023.

His election came as part of the CII’s annual general meeting (AGM), which took place yesterday (4 October 2022).

Over the coming months, the appointee will work closely with current CII president and Aston Lark chief executive Peter Blanc before he takes over as president and chair of the President’s Forum on 1 January 2023.

In addition to Higginbotham’s election, the CII has appointed Kingfisher Insurance insurer relations director Ian Callaghan as deputy president.

CII chief executive Alan Vallance thanked Blanc for his “fantastic continuing work as president and for his focus on the profession addressing the unmet needs of society and showing the true value of advice”.

He added: “I look forward to working closely with Russell as our new president and Ian as our new deputy president in 2023 on ways to raise public trust in the insurance and financial planning profession.”

Higginbotham’s history

Higginbotham began his career in 1986 with a UK life insurer before joining Munich Re as a senior marketing analyst in 1991.

He then joined Swiss Re in 1994 and has since held a variety of roles – including life and health country manager for Japan and head of life and chief executive of (re)insurance UK and Ireland.

He said: “I am delighted and honoured to have been elected as CII President for 2023. I look forward to commencing my term of office in January.”

Callaghan, meanwhile, said: “Thank you to all the CII members who have supported my election as deputy president.

“Your support is very important to me and I am looking to forward to taking up office in the New Year.”
