The appointee’s ‘strong operational background’ will help to ensure the insurer maintains a ‘fully optimised operating model’, says group chief executive
Global specialty (re) insurer Chaucer has appointed Hayley Spink as its new group chief operating officer.
Spink replaces incumbent David Bendle, who will retire as planned at the end of 2024 following 22 years of service.
Chaucer said the new appointee would become responsible for leading the development and implementation of Chaucher’s operations and service strategy.
Spink, who will join the insurer in Q4 2024, has over 20 years of London market experience, including as head of global operations at Lloyd’s.
She held numerous other senior roles at Lloyd’s since 2007, including director of Lloyd’s Brexit Programme and programme manager of Lloyd’s China Insurance Company.
Prior to this, she worked at HSBC between 2000 and 2007, where she managed operational strategies across various departments.
She will join Chaucher from Apollo Syndicate 1969, where she currently serves as chief operating officer and has worked for just over three years.
Operational background
Richard Milner, Chaucher’s group chief executive, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Spink as Chaucher’s new group chief operating officer.
”Her strong operational background and considerable experience will be key in ensuring we maintain a fully optimised operating model across ever aspect of the group.”

Milner himself was appointed to Chaucer in January 2024, with Spink’s appointment following c-suite changes that saw James Wright become chief financial officer and Werner Joubert become chief risk officer.
Spink added: ”I’m greatly looking forward to joining Chaucher and working closely with the team to build on Chaucher’s excellent reputation.”
