’She arrives at an exciting time for us in retail,’ says chief executive
Brown and Brown Europe has appointed Carolyn Callan as the managing director of its retail division, a statement released today (17 November 2023) said.
In her new role, Callan will work with the retail senior leadership team to drive growth across the arm and develop and retain talent in the business.
With her also assuming oversight for a number of businesses, Callan will aim to bolster operational efficiency.
“I’m excited to be joining Brown and Brown at such a pivotal time for the business and retail broking in particular,” Callan said.
“I have been impressed by their energy and drive to get things done, their integrity and collaborative approach and of course, the commitment to a positive culture, people and talent across the business.”

Experience
Callan has worked in the UK insurance industry for over 21 years in both broking and on the insurer side, with her building up expertise in the commercial lines market.

In broking, she was responsible for setting up and leading the commercial division of Swinton as director of commercial insurance.
She also oversaw business development and marketing strategy for Towergate’s SME and advisory broking operation.
On the insurer side, Callan took up the roles of commercial lines director and head of SME and schemes at Covea Insurance.
She took up her new role at Brown and Brown on 1 November 2023 and reports to Duncan Carter, chief executive of the UK retail division.
“Carolyn is a highly experienced executive and it’s great that someone of her calibre has chosen to come to us for the next stage of her career,” Carter said.

His career began in 2019, when he joined a local north London newspaper after graduating from the University of Sheffield with a first-class honours degree in journalism.
He took up the position of deputy news editor at Insurance Times in March 2023, before being promoted to his current role in May 2024.View full Profile
