’[Her] strategic leadership will help ensure we continue to deliver for our customers,’ says chief executive

Brown and Brown Europe has promoted Carolyn Callan to the role of chief executive for UK retail after it was announced that Duncan Carter would step down.

The broker said that last week (21 May 2024) that Carter was departing as the retail business ”nears the end of the latest stage of its transformation”.

Successor Callan joined the business as managing director in November 2023 and has been working with the retail senior leadership team to drive growth across the arm.

Her career has also seen her hold senior positions at Covea, Towergate and Swinton.

Mike Bruce, chief executive of Brown and Brown Europe, said that she was the right person to lead the next phase of growth.

“Since joining us last November, Carolyn has made a strong impact,” he said.

“Carolyn’s strategic leadership will help ensure we continue to deliver for our customers and create an environment of growth for our retail teammates.”

Second appointment

Meanwhile, Stuart Grieb will assume the newly created position of chief commercial officer for the UK retail business.

Prior to joining the firm in 2020, Grieb held senior positions at Willis Towers Watson (WTW), Brightside Insurance and Towergate.

While continuing his southern region leadership role, he will also begin to work with the wider retail leadership team to help bolster financial performance across the retail sector.

Bruce said: “Stuart has a real focus on detail, good execution of profit drivers and a tight grip on the financials.

“We have untapped potential within the business that this new role will help us realise.”
