’In a crowded market, our way of working gives us points of difference against our peers,’ says new chief executive
Broker Academy Insurance Services has promoted chief financial officer (CFO) Martin Tyler to become its new chief executive.
Tyler replaces incumbent Gilles Normand, who has stepped down to move into a non-executive career.
The appointee joined Academy in March this year, having previously worked alongside the broker’s chairman Brendan McAfferty at Brightside.
Tyler is an experienced executive, having been chief financial and operating officer at Howden between 2016 and 2018 and chief financial controller at Bluefin Insurance, among other senior roles.
Prior to joining Academy earlier this year, he was employed as CFO at wealth management firm Kingswood Group.
Group managing director Richard Beaven, chief operating officer Nick Mountifield and chief people officer Judy Thompson will remain in post to make up the executive team.
Clear vision
McAfferty said: ”Having worked with Tyler previously, I know him to be a successful and proactive leader with a clear vision for the future growth and success of Academy.”

He also thanked Normand, explaining that he had been the “driving force behind the transformation of Academy” during the June 2023 investment by private equity firm Blixt and the acquisition of commercial lines broker Premierline earlier in March earlier this year.
”He leaves a fantastic legacy that Tyler and the team will build upon during the next phase and we wish him all the best for the future,” he added.
Commenting on his own promotion, Tyler said: “In a crowded market, our way of working gives us points of difference against our peers and will be a decisive factor in enabling us to meet our longer term aims.
“I am ambitious to continue to acquire like-minded businesses and to give our customers the opportunity to benefit from the insurance skills and capabilities of our people.
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to lead the development of Academy as a purpose-led business, which marries people, technology and data to give reassurance to our customers that they have bought a policy that meets their needs, beyond doubt.”
