Conservative party member, first Muslim peer and former insurance broker Lord Sheikh has died today (27 September 2022), aged 81.
He had been a member of the House of Lords since his appointment by Michael Howard in 2006 and played an active role in the second house.
In a LinkedIn post, Biba’s chief executive Steve White said: “We at Biba are saddened to learn of the passing of Lord Sheikh.
”His involvement with us saw him chair our Southeast regional committee and spend some time on the main Biba board.
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
Great work
Lord Sheikh started his career in the UK in 1962, 10 years before Idi Amin forced his family out of Uganda –where he grew up – along with thousands of other Ugandan asians.
Shortly after his arrival in the UK, Lord Sheikh received training at insurance firm Sun Alliance and London Group.
In 1996, Sun Alliance Group merged with Royal Insurance Holdings to become Royal and Sun Alliance Insurance Group. In 2008, this became RSA Insurance Group.
He then began working at Lloyd’s broking firm Camberford Law, which he went on to become chairman and chief executive of and turn into a public company.

Lord Sheikh also founded the Conservative Muslim Forum and chaired it for several years, before becoming president of the forum.
He became chairman of the Conservative Ethnic Diversity Council where he attracted more ethnic candidates into politics.
