A Formula One debut, a female insurtech chief executive gets recognition, claims inspired poets and insurtech partnerships – what has the insurance industry been up to of late? You heard it here first…
Insurtech boss named on powerlist
In mid-March, Janthana Kaenprakhamroy, chief executive of Tapoly, was named in Innovate Finance’s latest Women in Fintech Powerlist 2023.
The UK fintech industry body’s list celebrates more than 250 women across eight categories, recognising those that it feels have made an impact across the financial services sector.
Kaenprakhamroy was mentioned in the senior leaders category, as well as the Standout 45 section – this highlights women that Innovate Finance believes are “making an incredible lasting impact in fintech, over and above their day-to-day role”.
An ode to claims
English performance punk poet John Cooper Clarke, also known as the bard of Salford, was enlisted by Hiscox last month to document some of the insurer’s most unusual claims using poetry.
Released on World Poetry Day on 21 March 2024, the finished poems detail a jewellery heist carried out by a poltergeist, as well as a wildlife photographer whose equipment was pinched by baboons.
Clarke performs each of these poems on YouTube.
Knockout partnership
Insurtech Stubben Edge rolled out its Duffy Boxing app at a new gym in Hackney Wick on 20 March 2024.
Alongside Stubben Edge’s chief technology officer, Jason Bingham, and former professional fighter Ciaran Duffy, the insurtech’s group chief executive Chris Kenning originally launched Duffy Boxing in April 2023 to give users content about boxing training without having to spend a fortune.
Kenning has loved boxing since he was 13-years-old.
Reserving success
Aventum Group chief executive, David Bearman, watched his son Oliver Bearman make his Formula One debut in early March 2024.
The 18-year-old reserve stepped up after his team’s first choice driver suffered appendicitis. Representing Ferrari, Bearman qualified in 11th place before grabbing 7th place in the final race, beating the likes of Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton.
Commenting on his son’s performance, David Bearman said: ”I’m extremely proud, he did well and an awesome job.”
The Speculator
On 26 March 2024, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) gave the greenlight to the proposed £1.2bn merger between MGA Markerstudy and Ardonagh-owned broker Atlanta Group.
This followed the regulator launching an inquiry in January 2024 to explore whether such a deal could result in a “substantial lessening of competition within any market or markets in the UK for goods or services”.
Now that this deal has been given the go ahead, how might it change or impact the broking landscape?
