’Through the ABI, the industry is stronger together and I look forward to working even more closely with members and business leaders,’ says appointee

The ABI has appointed Phoenix Group chief executive Andy Briggs as its new president.

Briggs has taken on the role with immediate effect and will remain in the position for the next two years.

He replaces Zurich’s Tim Bailey, who has held the role of president since 2023. His departure comes following him becoming chief executive of the insurer’s life protection arm in January 2025.

Briggs, who brings over 30 years of experience to the role, has been the chief executive at Phoenix Group for the last five years.

Before this, he spent four years at Aviva in a range of roles, including chief executive of UK life and chief executive of UK insurance, global life and health.

Briggs said: “It is a privilege to become the ABI president. Our world-leading industry has a significant role to play right now to support economic growth, both protect customers, households and businesses across the UK and boost the returns on their investments.

“Through the ABI, the industry is stronger together and I look forward to working even more closely with members and business leaders to achieve these goals.”

Baroness Nicky Morgan, ABI chair, added: “We’re delighted Briggs is stepping into the role of president.

“His extensive experience across the UK’s insurance and long-term savings sector is especially pertinent at this time as we work with the industry, government and regulators to support the growth mission.

“We would like to thank Bailey for his generous support for the ABI, both as our president and throughout his time on the board. We wish him all the very best for his new role within Zurich.”

Board appointments

The ABI also announced the appointment of three new board members.

Drazen Jaksic, chief executive at Zurich UK, replaces Bailey, while Alistair Hargreaves, chief executive of UK insurance at Admiral, replaces Cristina Nestares.

And Chris Carroll, the top boss at Bupa Insurance UK, replaces Alex Perry.

Meanwhile, Ken Norgrove, RSA’s UK and International chief executive, remains the ABI’s deputy president.
