Specialist motorcycle insurer H&R Insurance Services has warned that premiums for riders are set to rise in the New Year.

Managing director Hugh Robertson said premium rates had been soft for a large part of 2003. But the summer heatwave had encouraged more bikers to take to the road resulting in a rise in claims, he warned.

Robertson said the extra cost would have filtered through to underwriters by the beginning of the New Year and predicted that rates would climb sharply.
