Marsh & McLennan Companies (MMC) has appointed Sir Peter Middleton to the new role of UK chairman. Middleton will remain non-executive chairman of Marsh, a position he took up in July 2005. He will also remain a member of MMC's international advisory board.

Middleton's career includes positions in both the public and private sectors. Recruited to HM Treasury in 1960, he was appointed permanent secretary in 1983.

Following his retirement from the Civil Service in 1991, Middleton was appointed deputy chairman of Barclays and chairman of Barclays investment bank. Between 1999 and 2004 he was chief executive and later group chairman of Barclays.

In his new role, Middleton will focus will be on developing and deepening relationships with major UK clients.

Commenting on the appointment, MMC vice chairman Mathis Cabiallavetta said: “We are very pleased that someone with a background as distinguished as Sir Peter's, in both the public and private sectors, has agreed to take on this role. His experience of operating at the highest level within major organisations gives him special insights into the challenges facing management teams and boards.
