The Motor Insurers Information Centre (MIIC) has made its first referrals to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for non-compliance in supplying information required by the Motor Insurers' Database (MID).

Head of the MIIC Neil Drane said it had referred two commercial vehicle operators to the CPS. He said: "We ran a pilot sample of 330 operators who were unpopulated on the MID.

"Out of that number we were left with two that did not comply with information required by the MID, therefore we passed their names on to the police."

The MIIC is to follow up the pilot with a second much larger scheme designed to cut down on more of the 40,000 commercial vehicle operators who remain unpopulated on the database.

Drane said he was asking insurers to ensure policyholders informed the MID of details of their fleets.
