Loss adjuster McLarens Toplis North America has already received many instructions from clients and is waiting for the exclusion zone below 14th Street to be lifted to begin work.

Operations are being directed from the company's New Jersey office as the New York office lies within the exclusion zone and is closed following the attack.

McLarens Toplis International business director Alex Gargolinski said more than 30 senior loss adjusters were ready to travel to the US. “We're making ready under instructions from our American colleagues,” he said.

Gargolinski said debris was up to ten storeys deep around the World Trade Centre Plaza and he warned of the need for care working in such an environment.

“There is a real risk of another tragedy if they are not careful about how they remove the debris,” he said.

Gargolinski predicted it would take at least a couple of months for the site to be painstakingly cleared. “The structural surveys, the search for remains, the general search is going to take a very long time,” he said.
