More than one in 10 motorists on UK roads are at risk of having any motor insurance claim they make turned down because they have lied on their insurance application, according to Asda motor insurance.

Recent research reveals the seven most common lies told by motorists in an effort to keep the cost of insurance down with the location of overnight parking, top of the list. 11% of motorists claiming that their vehicle is parked on a drive or in a garage overnight, instead of on the street.

The next most common lie concerns the value of the car, with 6% of motorists deliberately reducing the value of their car in a bid to keep the cost of insurance down.

Gev Lynott, director of financial services at Asda, part of the US Wal-Mart giant, said: "The details you put on your application are part of the policy, and, if you make a claim, the policy details are checked against the circumstances of the claim."

Police reports and other inquiries usually highlight any discrepancies, such as where the car is usually parked, leaving the insurer well within their rights to turn the claim down.
