Lloyd's of London underwriters and insurance brokers gathered round the Lutine bell at 11am to pay their respects to the victims of the US terrorist attacks.
The bell was rung twice, to mark the beginning and end of a minute's silence, for those who died.
Lloyd's chairman, Sax Riley, said: "We are not here today to discuss losses but pay our respects to the lost and the missing in this attack...They say that time is a great healer. I sincerely hope so," he said.
Lloyd's also confirmed the tragic events in the US will have an impact on the world's oldest insurer. It will be affected by United Airlines and American Airlines, and the World Trade Centre complex.
However, Lloyd's said it was too early to "quantify" a figure for the total losses.
