Legal & General is to give newlyweds a 10% increase in their household insurance cover to protect them from being targeted by burglars taking advantage of the abundance of wedding gifts and houses left empty during honeymoons.

It said the free 10% of cover would apply to the month before and month after the wedding, when newlyweds were most at risk from being separated forcibly from their wedding gifts.

Legal & General's head of marketing Andy Sampson: "Sadly, the combination of expensive gifts and an empty house while the couple are on honeymoon presents an opportunity for burglars.

"Couples should be very careful about storing presents out of sight and locking all windows and doors before they go away.

"They should also be aware that the value of the gifts might exceed their insurance limit, so if the worst does happen, apart from the obvious emotional distress, they may not even be able to replace the goods."
