Insurance law firms Barlow Lyde & Gilbert and Clyde & Co are in advanced talks over a merger.

According to reports, the deal could create a law firm with more than 1000 lawyers and combined revenues of more than £300m - one of the largest legal mergers in the UK.

It is understood that partners could get the chance to vote on the deal by the end of June.

To push the merger through both firms are expected to need 75% backing.

A merger would hand BLG a presence in the US, Continental Europe and the Middle East, where Clydes has 10 offices.

BLG currently has seven offices in the UK, Asia and South America.
