Premium hikes in the republic much higher than in the UK
The Irish Consumers' Association has called for the Competition Authority and the Oireachtas Regulatory Affairs committee to investigate rising personal insurance costs, the Irish Independent reports.
Central Statistics Office inflation data shows a 22.5% rise in home insurance premiums, and a 12.9% rise in private car insurance premiums. This compares with a rise of 1% rise in household insurance in the UK, and 10% in motor premiums, according to the UK's Office for National Statistics.
A number of insurers, with Quinn the latest, have warned that they want to raise rates.
