The number of pet insurance claims for obesity related problems more than doubled between 2000 and 2003, said Asda.

But it said only one in ten people in the UK had insurance cover for their pets.

A survey conducted by the supermarket found that 82% of vets in the UK described obesity as a significant problem for UK pets, while one in five vets said a quarter of the cases they dealt with were obesity related.

It said the average cost of each obesity-related visit to the vet was nearly £150, with one in five visits costing £200 of more.

The company said it had produced a ‘CAtkins’ diet to help pet owners keep their pets healthy.
