Michael Bright in dock over fraud charges

The long awaited trial of Michael Bright and two other former directors of collapsed Independent Insurance is due to start today at Southwark Crown Court.

Bright, Philip Condon, Independent’s former deputy managing director, and Dennis Lomas, the former finance director, have been charged with conspiracy to defraud shareholders and policyholders.

All three deny the charges.

The first few days of the trial, which could last for over six months, are likely to be taken up by jury selection and legal argument.

If convicted, they face a maximum sentence of 10 years for conspiracy to defraud under the Fraud Act (2006).
