Britain should brace itself for summer heatwaves similar to that of 2003, warned scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, prompting fears of more subsidence claims.

The scientists said that every second European summer was likely to be as warm, if not warmer than, the summer of 2003.

Nigel Barham, of loss adjuster Cunningham Lindsey, said: "This heightens the need to harness our current subsidence skills to actively manage existing property portfolios and new builds."
