Nearly one-third of consumers don’t inform insurers of structural changes to their property
Research from Uswitch has revealed that more than half of UK homeowners who carry out extension work to their homes may be invalidating their insurance by not informing insurers.
This means that almost one-third (30%) of all consumers could be invalidating their home insurance policy.
The price comparison website said homeowners were unaware of the need to inform insurers of structural changes to their property, and that only 17% check the details of their policy and contact their insurer before commencing work.
Uswitch personal finance expert Michael Ossei said: “We are a nation gripped by extension fever, with many people deciding to create more space in their existing home rather than move. But, with all the emotional and financial challenges of building work, home insurance is often the last thing on your mind.
“It’s absolutely vital to get in touch with your insurer before you start on any home improvement project to see how it will affect your policy. If you are extending your home you are likely to be increasing the rebuild cost – so you will need to make sure this is updated with your insurer.”
