Fortis Insurance Limited (FIL) is sponsoring the expansion of a training initiative to help incoming presidents of local CIIs become accomplished public speakers.

The Speaking in Public workshops will be offered around the country and will be delivered by a leading expert in public speaking.

Barry Smith, chief executive of FIL, said: “The local institute is essential to the success of the CII. Its president, as the figurehead, has a highly visible role. For many presidents, public speaking is the most daunting aspect of their year in office. I am, therefore, extremely pleased that Fortis Insurance Limited is supporting presidents and local institutes by sponsoring these workshops in 2006.

“Eleven one-day workshops were run in the latter half of 2005 and 14 are planned for 2006. The feedback from the initial programme has been excellent. As one delegate put it, “During my career I have been on about six or seven of these types of courses but I have got more out of today than all of the others put together.”

CII group sales and marketing director, Lee Gladwell, said that supporting local institutes is essential: “We have a superb network of 62 institutes in the UK with an army of motivated and committed members who want to raise the profile of qualified insurance practitioners. We are working hard to provide them with the tools to accomplish this and very much appreciate the support from Fortis. Public speaking provides ideal opportunities for organisations to get specific messages across and this training enables presidents to do so in a polished and professional manner.”
